Airspeed Horsa in 15mm

This is the build record of the Old Glory Airspeed Horsa in 15mm.

Step 1 was to cut the fuselage into two parts to allow me to model this as a landed model which has been unloaded. I had sanded down and fitted the top wing as part of the general clean up.  This shows all the components:

  • Fuselage (single piece) with marking lines to allow you to cut it into two pieces.
  • Top wing
  • Horizontal stabilisers for the both sides
  • White metal wheels, shock aborbers, stabiliser supports and assorted antennae

Step 2 is a good clean up.

Component parts give a grey spray to start addressing the surface imperfections which this kit has a lot of.

The fuselage isn't round. I should be able to drill out the middle and then use a dremel to hollow out both sections to a depth of about 20mm (ie the depth of the dremel tool).  But we will see.

A good rub down with the sanding sponge and then another coat of grey.  This is really taking a lot more effort than I want so I will do one more pass and then just live with it.

So the fuselage has been hollow out to about a depth of 10-12mm with the dremel.  The main fuselage means I am now at the joint with the wing and a bit nervous about going to far.  The tail section begins to narrow and I don't want to go too far that way either.  I will leave it for tonight and them have a look in the morning.

Just a slightly different angle.

Replaced the white metal horizontal stabiliser supports with brass to make it more robust

And, starting to look at the base.  I think I want to have it in two parts to change the look between different games.

Floor fitted plus the white metal parts. Black undercoat completed

Base coat of the Dark Earth on.  I need to change the needle and nozzle assembly to get a better coating as it is currently set up with my fine needle and doesn't cover very well.

Staring to move along now. Silly putty mask before spraying the RAF Green.  This is BS241 which I think is the wrong shade.

I tried out some tape options before finishing the tail section to make sure it would all fit.  Need to mask off properly and get the white banding done.

base colour on the cockpit added

The poorly moulded cockpit will be left as is and represent some broken perspex.

need to find some decals.

Minor set back and dropped it while getting into the drying cupboard. Broke the tail section and scratched some paint off.

While I am rebuilding the tail went back and did the invasion stripes.

Checking the decals for size
