1985 Campaign - 28th Army Inital Objectives

28^th Army Operational Directive

207 MRD will secure via Defensive operations the Army Northern Flank.  The intention is to pin West German units and flanking British formations by the threat of an assault along the estimated NATO inter Corp boundary which is expected to be along the line of the E34 Autobahn.  207 MRD will be reinforced with the Army AT Battalion and an additional Engineer battalion to create strongpoints as required to prevent NATO forces North of the Mittleland Kanal from attacking into the Flank of the Army main effort.  The Divisional Artillery Group will be reinforced with one Battalion of D20 howitzers from the Army Canon Regiment with its attendant special weapon contingent.

The remaining MRD will attack on Divisional frontages (120km).  Each Division is to push a Forward detachment through the NATO defences into their rear areas as soon as possible.  These forward detachments are not to engage in an fight of attrition with NATO units but seek routes around defended locations to disrupt the enemy Rear zones and seize suitable crossings over the R Weser.

12 GTD will be follow behind the main attack and will exploit any success.  Once pushed through the main NATO defence it is to be pulled forward by the Forward Detachments across the R Weser.

1985 Campaign - Terrain Analysis

I did some simple terrain analysis of the BAOR Map a while ago which I have dusted off.  The analysis was conducted taking the Movement Points from the Board Game for entering the differing terrain types displayed and colour coding it from 11 (River Crossing) down to 3.

It makes some interesting choices as it does mean that NATO can choose to deploy into protected terrain early on and then force the WP player into terrain that they cannot easily manoeuvre around or out of.  It does make the Autobahn towards Hanover a very attractive route for the WP though :)

1985 Campaign - West German Forces (General modelling)

Part of the campaign idea that I was pursuing was a WP attack with limited NATO reaction time.  Not the attack out of barracks that was feared but something with less than 7 days notice and with possibly only 12 - 24hours actual warning of combat operations.  As such the WG elements scattered across the 1 Br Corps operational area would have to compete with British units moving Eastwards while they complete their moves to the I Ge Corps area North of the British.

My WG forces have the 3 colour scheme, which is slightly early for 1985 but I do recall some camouflage schemes being present on the 332 Pz Gr Bn marders at Wesendorf in the period 1983 - 1984.  IIRC the Div HQ of 1 Pz was in green though during Ex Lionheart in 1984.

1985 Campaign - 6mm Terrain (2)

More housekeeping means finding some of the old pictures of my 6mm terrain which is used in the campaign.

Early game on in the 6mm projects life.  A 4 x 4 board at my gaming buddy's house with simple roads and terrain items.  I hadn't made any roads or rail sections at this stage

Following a bit of scratch building on the roads and finding out that the Hornby track planning set is a perfect match in this scale.

Roadsigns, again an idea take forward from discussions with Barrie at Timecast during the Reading show.  I found a German font which meant that I could make up anything I wanted and then just print out on card.

1985 Campaign - 6mm Terrain (1)

My 6mm terrain has had a couple of new additions to it.  Currently looking at a larger BUA with some new houses and an industrial complex.  I need another pack of the light industrial buildings to go on a 6" x 6" tile plus the petrol station needs to be planned.  Means my shopping list for warfare is building up ;)

The road system needs some thought as well to cover both the open road network as well as the BUAs

1985 Campaign - Warsaw Pact Operational Structure

First up is the relationship between HQ GSFG and the two Frontal Headquarters. The Tank and Combined Arms Armies are subordinated to the Front and not GSFG. The allocation of forces also included the incorporation of the NVA units in the Soviet Armies. For this I have split the 10 NVA divisions into two buckets with 4 MRD and 1 TD in each bucket. They are then distributed wider into the Soviet Armies. I have also taken Suvorov's statement about 28th Army HQ being assigned to one of the two fronts. This now gives me: Northern Front (name TBC) consists of 28th Army and 2 GTA as the two Combined Armies, with 3 Shock Army as the Tank Army. Southern Front (again name TBC) consists of 1 and 8 GTA as the Combined Armies and 20 Army as the Tank Army. Each CAA has one TD, 2 Soviet MRDs and two NVA MRDs assigned. Each Tank Army has 3 Soviet TD and 1 NVA TD. A Soviet TD is kept in reserve for each front. Follow on forces will come from NGF with a frontal organisation based in Poland reinforced from Beloyrussia. My campaign will see the Northern Front operate against NORTHAG. The Tank Army becomes the OMG for ops in NORTHAG rear as opposed to being a formation to lead the intial penetration. It will still feature but only if 28th Army makes the breakthrough. I have allowed a little artistic license in that my model collection is marked up for 12 GTD so I have used that as the TD for the 28th. My plan now see my Fictious ORBAT for the 28th Army lead the way. 2 GTA will continue its operations on the Northern flank against the Germans and Dutch formations. And I can adjust as necessary. I have also chosen to create a fictious Air Army to support the Northern Front. It takes just What I haven't worked out yet is a way for the British and Germans to react. So back to Solo generating with some occasional Military Judgement Panel on what the situation is.

INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY FOR PERIOD 01 AUG - 06 AUG 85
1. GSFG APPEARS TO BE MAINTAINING A HIGH LEVEL OF READINESS, SINCE THE CONCLUSION OF THE SUMMER EXERCISE PERIOD. LITTLE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN THE PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY RESTRICTED AREAS. THE MILITARY MISSIONS HAVE REPORTED AN INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE AND ACTIVE FOLLOWING OF THEIR PATROLS. A LETTER OF COMPLAINT HAS BEEN PASSED TO GSFG.
2. IT IS ASSESSED THAT GSFG CONTINUE TO INLOAD STOCKS, BUT IT IS OUR ASSESSMENT THAT THIS WILL NOT BE COMPLETE BEFORE 10 AUG 85. OUR ASSESSMENT IS BASED ON THE LEVEL OF CONSUMPTION DURING THE FINAL EXERCISE ACTIVITIES.
3. A. IT REMAINS OUR ASSESSMENT THAT 2 GTA WILL BE USED AGAINST THE NORTHERN REGION OF NORTHAG/BALTAP TO SEIZE SCHLESWIG HOLSTEIN AND TO SWEEP INTO THE NETHERLANDS POSSSIBLE POSING A THREAT TO NATO REAR AREAS.
B. 3 SA WILL BE USED AGAINST THE MAIN COMBAT AREA OF NORTHAG. THE LACK OF MOTOR RIFLE FORMATIONS IN THIS UNIT WOULD INDICATE THAT IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THIS FORMATION WILL BE USED TO INVEST ANY OF THE LARGE CONURBATIONS IN THE AREA.
C. 8 GTA IS ARRAYED AGAINST CENTAG AND IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS FORMATION WILL BE DIRECTED AGAINST FRANKFURT.
D. 20 GA REMAINS IN GSFG RESERVE AND IT IS ASSESSED THAT THIS FORMATION WOULD BE DEPLOYED SOME 24 HOURS AFTER THE REST OF GSFG. THIS FORMATION HAS 3 MOTOR RIFLE DIVISIONS AND IT IS ASSESSED THAT THIS FORMATION WOULD BE EMPLOYED AGAINST NORTHAG, PROVIDING 2 GTA AND 3 SA MAKE SUFFICIENT PROGRESS.
4. 16 AIR ARMY IS CONDUCTING REDUCED SORTIES WHICH INDICATE A LEVEL OF MAINTENANCE PRIOR TO CONDUCTING SUSTAINED OPERATIONS.
5. OUR OBSERVATION OF SPECIAL WEAPONS STORAGE FACILITIES DOES NOT REVEAL ANY FORWARD STORAGE OF CHEMICAL OR NUCLEAR MUNITIONS

1. HQ GSFG AT ZOSSEN HAS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE HELSINKI ACCORD ANNOUNCED A NO NOTICE AIR DEFENCE EXERCISE COMMENCING 040030Z AUG 85 AND LASTING FOR 12 HOURS.
